AVOIDING BAD HABITS

Hello,

Do you know that the most common bad habit is telling lies?

It is not murder, rape or robbery. Yes it may not be as heinous as murder or rape and it may not be bad as taking away things that do not belong to you. But it is the most widespread and grows rapidly.

Getting into this habit is as easy as slipping into a cloak two sizes too big.
Imagine coming late for office and meeting the boss at the door. Can we say we got up late and regret the delay or will we lie about an imaginary traffic jam or punctured wheel and try to sneak through the small gate the lie offers?

Most of us have surely gone in for the second option.
Harmless lie we tell ourselves.
Does not hurt anyone and we get away from a situation where the truth would have either made us a butt of office jokes or allowed the boss to pass some ugly remarks on our unprofessional attitude.

Just like the cloak, a lie conceals the flaws temporarily but again just like it, it also puts unnecessary burden on our shoulder.

Now imagine a similar scene with minor changes. We are late for an appointment and we lie about the reason for the delay. This time we are accompanied by our kid whom we have been coaching on the importance of telling the truth.

Unwittingly we have spread the habit. The child now picks it up from us. If telling lies works for the parent it will surely work for the child.

We say it is fine if the lies are harmless, but we are planting a seed that can grow into a tree. Are we ready to live under the shade of a tree full of thorns?

I'm sure the answer is no.

Cutting this habit is easy. Do we know how?

Best regards,
Manoj
